“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” -- Dietrich Bonheoffer, theologian, martyr in German Resistance Movement to Nazism
Do you ever struggle with wanting to do the right thing, but at the same time, you don’t want to create a difficult situation? For example, you have probably at times been around people who are judgmental or critical of your values. You may have also watched friends or family members making bad choices. How many times have you opted not to speak up because you do not want to deal with the repercussions if you did?
Each of us, when faced with situations that require courage, no doubt have had some regrets. We have probably all looked the other way at times when we should have stood strong. But some of us succumb to social pressure so often that it no longer feels uncomfortable.
You have to work hard to become the type of person who does the right thing despite pressure to do otherwise. Strengthening your soul is like strengthening your body. You need steady and demanding exercise to strengthen your body. Likewise, you must consistently make tough choices if you want to strengthen your soul.
