What Are You Living For?
“All their life in this world had only been the cover and title page; now they were beginning Chapter 1 of the Great Story, which no one on earth has read, which goes on forever, and which every chapter is better than the one before."
-- C.S. Lewis on the last page of The Chronicles of Narnia
Your thoughts about death can have a big influence on how you approach life. You can live your life as if it is all you have, as if death is an ending that has no bearing on how you live. Or, you can choose to trust that death is the painful, but blessed passage that will bring you face-to-face with God. People in the latter category, who have this unshakeable trust, tend to live their lives differently than those who don’t. It is not that they live their lives passively, as if waiting for what is to come. Quite the opposite as they live it with more passion and fulfillment because they know what awaits them.
Here is an analogy: imagine two sports teams, each holding separate practices on nearby fields. One team knows it is playing in the championship that weekend: the other team’s season is over once practice ends. It’s obvious which team will practice with more excitement and commitment.
And so it is with your life as well. Your life on earth will be much more fulfilling when you trust something great is awaiting you.
